TAMPA – A man who was just a few hours short of his birthday lost his life while trying to cross a bay area road.
42-year-old Billy Ivy, of Tampa, was crossing Waters Avenue near Grady Avenue around 9:30 Sunday night. Ivy, who would have been celebrating his 43rd birthday at midnight, was struck by a vehicle.
A passing motorist soon called 911 to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center, reporting a male down in the roadway. Deputies and paramedics rushed to the scene, not expecting what they would find. Crews quickly realized Ivy had be struck by a vehicle and attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
Later, a driver of a Chevy Impala, identified as 20-year-old Amanda Bentz, of Tampa, returned to the scene and confessed to hitting Ivy. Bentz told deputies she went home to bring her parents to the scene.
Waters Avenue between Dale Mabry Highway and Manhattan Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours while traffic homicide detectives conducted their investigation.
Ivy was not crossing in a crosswalk and the area is poorly lit. It’s unknown whether Bentz will face any charges.
