BRANDON – A man is feared dead after a sinkhole opened up under his house, swallowing him.
The incident happened late Thursday night in the 200 block of Faithway Drive in Brandon. Suddenly, the floor in two rooms in the house started sinking and the residents called 911.
One man became trapped in the 15 foot deep sinkhole. His brother attempted a rescue but a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy pulled him to safety so he didn’t fall into the sinkhole as well.
Crews we spoke to on scene say it’s common to see sinkholes open in yards and streets, but one opening up under a house and resulting in a death is hard to recall.
Rescue crews arrived and used cameras, microphones and sonar devices to pick up any indication that the victim may be alive in the dirt and rubble. So far, nothing has turned up.
Investigators say the house is condemned and the will not be able to search again until daylight.
